What makes someone a courageous leader? A courageous leader is a person who is willing to follow one’s conscience and fight for what is right, even in the face of great sacrifice. Such a person can be an ordinary people among us. Sophie Scholl was a powerful example of a courageous young woman who refused to be silenced and fought for what she believed.
Sophie and her brother Hans were members of the White Rose. The young people from the group shared their love for nature, literature, music, and art. Their conversation changed as Hitler started World War II and German army committed atrocities around Europe. They published and distributed pamphlets, in which they expressed opposition to Nazi regime. They called upon people to act and sabotage Hitler’s war machine. They have distributed thousands of leaflets. Sophie and Hans were arrested, tried for treason, and executed in 1943 along with another member of the White Rose. Sophie stood up for what she believed during the mock trial. She did not waver despite been sentenced to death.
Sophie showed her defiance and bravery when many older people are too afraid to. Her courage reminds me that my voice matters, and I should not stay silent when it is time to stand up to what I believe in. Her willingness to give up her life at such a young age for a righteous cause leads me to believe that a courageous leader can be anyone of us. I am fortunate enough to live in peace time. However, Sophie’s story continues to inspire me. I believe by getting involved with our community and willing to help others in need, we can all be courageous leaders in our own ways.
