Are Organic Foods Worthwhile?

Kids from my generation are very familiar with the word “organic.” There are so many foods in the supermarket labeled “organic.” In my family, my parents are always browsing the organic section of the supermarket. I haven’t really thought about what organic food really means until recently. It’s not easy to define organic food in one sentence, because there are many rules and standards. In general, organic foods are produced by farmers who use renewable resources to enhance the environmental quality. No antibiotics or growth hormones were given to animals. Organic food is produced without using conventional pesticides, and organic fertilizers. The complicated food production process and higher price for the customers make some people question organic food. Are they worthwhile? I am a strong supporter for organic foods. They produce nutritious food with no potential retained pesticide or toxic metals to harm people’s health. Organic farming provides long-term benefits to the people and the environment. Also, studies show there are many health benefits for eating organic foods. Many non-organic or processed foods tend to contain pesticides or chemicals. Organic food is farmed safely with no harmful chemicals or hormones.

Firstly, organic foods are produced using approved methods, such as recycling and preserving biodiversity. Eating organic includes fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy products. Benefits of organic foods are nutrients, no pesticide, and no toxic metals. Researchers have found out that organic produce contains a bit more nutrients than foods produced by regular farming. Many foods have pesticides, but organic foods do not. Pesticide is extremely harmful to humans, and it may cause “short-term health effects”.

Secondly, organic farming also helps with environmental and animal welfare. Regular farming uses pesticide on the soil and plants, which causes the soil to be infused with pesticide. If any animals mistakenly decide to eat the plant or accidentally eat the dirt, then they might die because of the pesticide infection. Organic farming increases long-term soil fertility. Also, this farming method can control pests and diseases without harming the environment. Our environment and animal welfare benefit profoundly from organic farming.

Finally, studies show that organic and nonorganic nutritional values differ only slightly. Organic produce has more micronutrients like iron and zinc compared to nonorganic foods. Other researchers have concluded that eating organic foods can reduce the risk of allergies and obesity. Organic foods have much less cadmium, which is a toxic chemical found in many plants and soils. By eating organic, you can have many more health benefits.

In a nutshell, organic farming makes lots of benefits for our environment and future generations. Organic foods give people more nutritional values which other conventional or processed food can’t. Finally, there’s no harmful pesticides or growth hormones retained in organic foods. Even though organic foods can be expensive, it’s worthwhile. Organic produce can reduce the number of chemicals that you might be exposed to, and you will also receive much more nutrition. Organic food is beneficial to your health, and I think that people should buy them more often.
