One of the books that I recently read is called ALABAMA MOON by Watt Key. It’s about a boy called Moon, who has lived in a forest shelter with his father for his whole life. One day, Moon’s father dies, and Moon suddenly faces the difficulties of life. Now that the government’s after him, Moon sharpens his skills and learns to survive by himself in the wild. During his adventures, he meets friends, enemies, and even jails and lawyers. His friends Kit and Hal accompany him on his journey of heading to Alaska to escape the law.
This excerpt was from one of the letters that he wrote to his dead dad:
“Dear pap,
I think the law is after me now, so I am going to start for Alaska tomorrow. I meant to ask Mr. Abroscotto if he had a map, but I had to whip up on him for talking mean about you. I’m afraid if I go back again the law will be there waiting for me.”
I really enjoyed this book because even though it’s fiction, I feel like some kids can relate to it. It was also a wholesome story about friendship and loyalty, and I think that we should learn from Moon to be independent, trustworthy, and proud.
