As I crawled out from under the thicket, I realized everything was shrouded in a light mist.
The forest was quiet and, as I ran through the woods looking for the cave, I stumbled over a Snow Owl nest. I decided I could pick some of the chicks up and carry them back to the cave, then I heard a sound of twigs cracking in the space behind me. I started to sprint away, then I started to run, my paws leapt over brambles and fallen trees.
Suddenly, I heard a mournful howl sounding in the direction of the cave. I followed the howl until the cave was in sight, I whirled around with joyousness and sprinted towards the cave, I ran into my mother, who was just coming out of the cave to go on the meat trail. She used her tail and shoved me into the cave, I landed in a clump of dried moss in the corner of the cave. I hit the wall with a loud thump, then, I started to cry, my whimpers and cries were drowned out by the sudden crack of thunder and pattering of rain.
As I dropped the Snow Owl egg onto the hard, cold, and damp gray floor, it started shaking, I pressed it down with my paw and snarled at it. It kept moving and shaking. Finally, it cracked open, a little Snow Owl peeped out, I jumped upon it, paws outstretched and mouth open, I bit it’s wing, the warm blood trickled inside my mouth, the chick kicked and flailed.
I bit it again, this time biting the other wing, the chick seemed to scream and scratch. I lunged for the throat this time, I bit down hard and heard little bones cracking and snapping. A couple minutes later, the little bird was gone.
Then, my mother came back in with a dead, full-grown Lynx, I jumped back and snapped at the Lynx, even though it was dead already.
My father trotted into the cave, he had blood and scratches all over his gray, withered fur, he looked outraged and in a bad temper. When I tried to greet him, he snapped at me, which sent me reeling backwards into the cave wall with a thud. My mother came to my defense, she snarled at my father, lips drawn back to show her teeth.
He staggered back out of the cave dripping, blood with him. When my father left the cave, blood was spilled all over the cave floor, my mother snarled, and then ran to me. She started licking me fast and quick, with a tongue that caused no damage. Only when hunting and battling, she would lash out with her front paws, spin around the opponent, and bite the throat with a fast, agile move. My father usually scavenges around for already dead animals instead of fighting for meat.
He usually takes the meat for himself, he never shares it with me and mother. One day, mother took me to the left crossroad of the trail, as we trotted along, we saw my father heading toward us with a crazed look in his eyes, he had a dead deer in his jaws. I tried to sprint forward to him, but mother blocked me with her tail and tried to warn him off.
He suddenly lunged at me, his jaws aiming for my throat, mother slashed him in the snout and bit his neck slightly. My father fell back with a snarl and tried to lunge at me again, with a snarl, and a whip with her tail. My mother sent my father skidding across the ground. He lay there for a couple of seconds, then he tried to get up but fell back again.
My mother warned him away from me and we trotted away. I knew exactly what my mother was thinking, we had to find a new cave to live in.
The next day, my mother woke me up early in the morning, when we took the left crossroad, we saw a live thing, a burning thing, orange and red and yellow flashed in front of me and my mother's eyes. Suddenly, a voice called, “Wolf!” Then, they said something in their language. A man picked me up, my mother snarled slightly, I bit the man. He got angry and hit me on the head. My mother bit his throat and a scream could be heard from the other men.
The first man was dead, my mother and I sprinted out as fast as our paws could carry us before things got ugly. The men were shouting in the background and screaming at us to get out of their sight. Me and my mother found a suitable cave and settled there for the longest time. With our luck, my father put his nose to the ground to try to sniff us out, and the very next morning, he was at our cave entrance.
Mother roused me with a soft push of her tail. And I immediately heard and smelled my father prowling outside of the cave entrance. My mother and I were slim so we could easily fit through the cave entrance, but my father always ate any dead things he found in the forest immediately after finding it, so he was not able to fit through. Something was trying to lure me out of the cave, I smelled meat and deer. My father wanted to kill me to have food in this famine, my mother knew, so she pushed me back with her nose. My father snapped at my mother from the cave entrance. My mother suddenly slid through the cave opening and pinned my father to the ground. Even though my father was bigger in size than my mother, she was more skilled and agile.
My father tried to bite her but she wacked him on the shout with her tail. I waited inside the cave, I was afraid, my mother came back in. My father was gone with the breeze. I went outside to play in the snow.
